T he effectiveness of personal involvement in the future development of Milam County can be enhanced through increased knowledge of the community’s history, citizenry and social, economic and political makeup. It is the intent of the Leadership Milam county program to provide a foundation of such knowledge, that potential leaders will use the knowledge to aid their involvement in community affairs.
The course objectives of Leadership Milam County are: to inform the participants about Milam county’s history, government, economy, social issues, needs and opportunities and the existing process for dealing with them; to introduce the participants to and establish dialogue with, each other and current leaders of Milam County; and to encourage the participants to actively participate in future activities, which contribute to the growth and betterment of Milam County.
The program is 9 months long with typically one class per month. Class topics include: an orientation and retreat event; the Economy; State government which included a trip to the Capitol; County and City Government; Education; Healthcare; Art and Culture; Agriculture and individual leadership development.
